We’re revisiting two standout March 2025 events hosted by the Centre for Media, Culture & Education (CMCE)—conversations that remain deeply instructive for scholars, artists, and educators.
Black Radical Filmmaking: Pedagogy and Praxis, March 5, 2025
This session explored Black filmmaking as a site of activism, critical discourse, and knowledge production. Discussions highlighted how cinema can foster community, resistance, and collaboration while shaping cultural and political narratives. Presenters included:
Maxine Malcolm, PhD candidate in Social Justice Education, who uses arts-based methods to critically analyze contemporary Canadian cinema through the lens of Black feminist filmmaking.
- Dr. Sara MacLean, filmmaker, installation artist, and film educator, whose work investigates Black radical filmmaking as a world-making pedagogy, appearing in venues such as Callaloo, Canadian Theatre Review, and The Routledge Companion.
Affective Detours: In-between Art, Research, and Life Practices, March 26, 2025
This session examined the intersections of life, research, work, and artistic practice, challenging rigid disciplinary boundaries and exploring the “myth of solitude” in scholarly and creative work. Featured speakers included:
Henrjeta Mece, artist, curator, and Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in Social Justice Education, whose interdisciplinary work has been exhibited internationally at venues including Zweigstelle Berlin, MOCA (Toronto), and ISCP.
Ana Barajas, Director of YYZ Artists’ Outlet, with extensive experience in sculpture, installation, and contemporary curation.
Lisa Steele, video, photography, and performance artist, co-founder of V tape, and a key figure in shaping the Graduate Program in Visual Studies at the University of Toronto.
These events offered attendees an opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research and creative practice, fostering dialogue between scholarship, art, and activism.
